Shell Houston Open picks

Last Week: 150 pts

Yahoo Rank: 77%

Overall Pts: 1623 pts

Looks like I didn’t need to question Tiger’s achilles last week.  This week is the Shell Houston Open with Phil as defending champ.

A List

I can see only three choices on the A list, Stricker, Bradley and Mickelson.  Even though Phil is defending champion, I am going to skip him this week.  He is focused on next weekend at Augusta, so I can’t depend on him this week.  You can’t go wrong starting Stricker and having Bradley on the bench.  I also like JB Holmes as a long shot.  He has been looking better lately.  I’d avoid Kyle Stanley who looks like he has hit a rough patch after the strong start to the season.

B List

Ernie Els is an easy pick on the B list. He is desperate to qualify for the Masters and the Houston Open is his last chance.  He may not win, but he will certainly get a top 5.  For the other starter I like Westwood and Mahan.  I will start Westwood mostly because I don’t want to run out of Mahan’s starts.  I’ll take a flyer on Brian Davis for the bench.

C List

The C list has a lot of interesting picks this week.  McDowell looked great last weekend, but I’d be surprised to see him contend a second week in a row. His play has not been consistent.  I’ve given Schwartzel and Baddley plenty of starts this season, but I think I’ll start Johnson Wagner based on his strong play at Bay Hill.  Peter Hanson has played great in his few starts in the US, so he gets the bench.

Start: Steve Stricker, Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Johnson Wagner

Bench: Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan, Brian Davis, Peter Hanson
