Honda Classic picks

Last Week: 108 pts

Yahoo Rank: 72%

Overall Pts: 1036 pts

Alternate field events are never easy points and last week was no exception.  This week’s is a full field event with many European players making their first US start of the year.

A List

In spite of the impressive field, the A list is a little sparse.  Four names stand out: Keegan Bradley, Spencer Levin, Kyle Stanley and Charles Howell III.  All four has played very well to start the season.  I think Bradley and Levin are playing hotter right now and I’ll take Bradley for the start.

B List

There is a lot to choose from on the B List. Rory McIlroy is an easy pick.  The guy finishes near the top in every tournament and will probably pick up the win after finishing 2nd at the Accenture Match Play.  I’ll start Mark Wilson who has won here before and is off to a hot start.  Tiger and Ryan Moore get the bench.

C List

I’m not a big Ben Crane fan, but he has been great so far this season with 3 top 10s. PGA National sets up well for his game so he gets the start.  Ricky Barnes is a good sleeper pick, but I’ll bench Charl Schwartzel.

Start: Keegan Bradley, Rory McIlroy, Mark Wilson, Ben Crane

Bench: Spencer Levin, Tiger Woods, Ryan Moore, Charl Schwartzel

Mayakoba Golf Classic picks

Last Week: 178 pts

Yahoo Rank: 79%

Overall Pts: 928 pts

Last week was a good one, picking the winner in Bill Haas and picking up a win in one of my leagues.  This week is the Accenture Matchplay which doesn’t work with Yahoo’s point system, so we go to the Mayakoba Golf Classic and no one in the top 64 in the world rankings.

A List

There are four names on the A list and this is a pretty easy choice.  Spencer Levin has played well all year and gets the start. CH3 likewise has played well and gets the bench.

B List

There is a lot to choose from on the B List. Harrison Frazar started the year well in Hawaii so he gets the start.  Apart from that no one has performed well this season, so I am picking more on potential.  Charlie Hoffman gets the start with Danny Lee and Briny Baird on the bench.

C List

The C list is an easy one with Johnson Wagner and Brian Gay standing out from the crowd.

Start: Spencer Levin, Harrison Frazar, Charlie Hoffman, Johnson Wagner

Bench: Charles Howell III, Danny Lee, Briny Baird, Brian Gay

Northern Trust Open picks

Last Week: 144 pts

Yahoo Rank: 67%

Overall Pts: 750 pts

The points were plentiful last week as my picks of Tiger and Aaron Baddeley paid off.  This week the Tour stops at Riviera Country Club and stacked field.  This week has more international players, so there are some new faces for this season.

A List

There are a lot of big names on the A list, world no. 1 Luke Donald, last week’s winner, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott in his first US tournament of 2012.  I am starting KJ Choi.  I really believe he is going to have a big year and he plays Riviera well.  Kevin Na has been on a hot streak and came in solo 3rd here last year, so he gets the bench.

B List

There is a lot to choose from on the B List. Dustin Johnson looked great last weekend so he gets the start.  Mark Wilson is on a hot streak so he also gets the start.  Ryan Moore played well at Pebble and cam in 4th here last year and gets the bench.  Going him on the bench is Bill Haas who has a good history here.  I didn’t consider Brandt Snedeker or Hunter Mahan, they haven’t played well here.  Jason Day would be worth a spot, but I am going to wait on him.  Ryan Palmer is a good sleeper pick.

C List

The defending champ, Aaron Baddeley is a must start on the C list, especially after playing well at Pebble.  There are some good picks for the bench.  Johnson Wagner and the power of the stache, Martin Laird, Bud Cauley and Jason Duffner are all good picks.  I am going with John Senden for the bench.  Ricky Barnes is a good sleeper pick.

Start: KJ Choi, Dustin Johnson, Mark Wilson, Aaron Baddeley

Bench: Kevin Na, Ryan Moore, Bill Haas, John Senden

AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am picks

Last Week: 128 pts

Yahoo Rank: 63%

Overall Pts: 606 pts

Pebble Beach, good. Long pro-am rounds, bad.  The past two weeks had more excitement than expected.  This week features the return of Tiger.

A List

The A list is fairly simple this week.  I swore off Phil before the season started (don’t sue me Phil). Some people will look at his record here and be tempted.  Might I remind you of his record at TPC Scottsdale?  There are only two I considered for the A list, Nick Watney, who gets the start, and Smokin’ Spencer Levin. I’m not expecting Levin to pull a Kyle Stanley, but I wouldn’t be surprised by a top 10.  He did finish T4 here last year.

B List

Have to say, I was surprised to find Tiger Woods on the B list.  His play isn’t back to Tiger standards, but I could easily see a top 5.  I’ll also give a start to Bryce Molder who is on a nice streak of top 15 finishes and had a T6 here in 2011. I like Hunter Mahan a lot but I worry that returning from Qatar last weekend will hurt his play.  He’s a good pick anyway and I’ll bench him along with defending champ DA Points.

C List

The C list is pretty sparse.  I’m starting the surprise rookie of 2012, John Huh. Maybe he’ll be the second surprise winner in a row. On the bench I am going with Aaron Baddley thanks to a T6 here last year.

Start: Nick Watney, Tiger Woods, Bryce Molder, John Huh

Bench: Spencer Levin, Hunter Mahan, DA Points, Aaron Baddley

Waste Management Open picks

Last Week: 136 pts

Yahoo Rank: 59%

Overall Pts: 478 pts

The Waste Management Open returns to TPC Scottsdale and there are so many good choices in the field.

A List

This week the A list is the weakest in terms of options.  Webb Simpson is an easy pick. He finished T8 last year and should improve on that this year. For the bench there are three options worth considering: Keegan Bradley, Matt Kuchar, and Spencer Levin.  Kuchar is steady and the safest pick.  Levin has put some impressive rounds, but hasn’t finished a tournament with a good result.  I’m going with Bradley on the bench.  He didn’t play here last year and he should have the crowds behind him.  Phil isn’t worth considering until he puts together four good rounds.

B List

Defending champion Mark Wilson already has a win this season, so he is an easy pick to start.  I’m also going to start Rickie Fowler who has played well here before and put up a T13 at the Farmers Open.  There are a lot of options for the bench, so much so that it is tough to decide. DA Points has  T12, T6 and T8 for his first three starts of the season and he finished T18 last year. Bill Haas is a dependable pick and finished in 4th last weekend. Brandt Snedeker snuck a win last weekend and finished T8 last year. And Gary Woodland finished T5 last year, though he hasn’t impressed this season yet.  I’m going with Snedeker and Points and ride the hot hand.

C List

The start is an easy pick with Martin Laird in the field. He finished T3 in 2011 and has a 2nd and T14 in his two starts in 2012.  The bench has some great choices.  Johnson Wagner has a win and is riding the power of the stache. Brian Gay is always a good player on the C list and came in T18 last year. Cameron Tringale has put some great rounds this year.  Jason Dufner came in 2nd in 2011.  I’m really tempted to go with Wagner but instead I’m going with past performance here and putting Dufner on the bench.

Start: Webb Simpson, Mark Wilson, Rickie Fowler, Martin Laird

Bench: Keegan Bradley, Brandt Snedeker, DA Points, Jason Dufner
